Laurel, MD — Arthur L. Leland, 76, of Laurel, Md., passed away on July 3, 2013, after a 13-year struggle with dementia.
Born on Sept. 12, 1936, in E. Bridgewater, Mass., the son of the late Robert A. and Frances A. (Stearns) Leland, he attended E. Bridgewater public schools. He graduated in 1958 from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, served in the Army from 1958 to 1961, received a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study and Masters in Education from UMass, and was a teacher and guidance counselor in the Amherst, Mass., schools for 12 years. Moving to New Hampshire in 1974, he was a self-employed insurance agent until his retirement in 2000. A longtime resident of E. Hampstead, N.H., he subsequently resided in Gaithersburg, Md., Woodbridge, Va., and Laurel, Md.
Three weeks after Arthur's death, his wife of 48 years, Gertrude F. (Markert) Leland, passed away on July 28. He is survived by son, William H. Leland of Vernon, Conn.; daughters, Karen J. Leland-St. Onge and husband, Edward, of E. Hartford, Conn., and Wendy E. Sauvageot and husband, Scott, of Laurel, Md.; and brothers, John E. Leland and wife, Sybil, of New London, N.H., and Howard A. Leland and wife, Linda, of Palmer, Mass.
ARRANGEMENTS: Memorial services will be held at noon on September 7, at the Union Congregational Church, 105 Pleasant St., E. Bridgewater, Mass. Interment will be at the Union Memorial Cemetery.
