ATKINSON, N.H. — Arthur Lewis Smith, Jr., 81, of Atkinson, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011 at Colonial Poplin Nursing Home in Fremont, N.H., with members of his family by his side. Arthur had been ill with Parkinson's Disease for several years.
He was born in Hardwick, Vt. on March 28, 1929, the son of Dr. Arthur L. Smith,Sr. and Francesca T. (Heath) Smith. Arthur grew up in Hardwick, attended Hardwick Academy and graduated with the class of 1947. He made many friends in Hardwick and maintained his connections with Hardwick throughout his life visiting friends and family frequently. He attended the University of Vermont in Burlington, graduating with a B.A. degree in 1951.
On July 31, 1951, he married Laura A. Latham of Burlington, Vt. In his earlier years, he was employed by the State of Vermont in the Personnel Division and was the State of Vermont Employee Classification Officer and, later, the Personnel Officer. His employment was interrupted when he was called to duty in the Korean War. His service as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army is recognized on the Veterans Memorial located in the town of Hardwick.
Upon his return from the service, he resumed employment with the State of Vermont Employment and Training Division. In 1981, he retired from State employment and in 1983 moved with his wife Laura, the love of his life, from Montpelier to Georgia, Vt., where they together enjoyed small farming, raising sheep, vegetable gardening, and cutting their own wood. They also ran "farm camp" for their children and grandchildren for many summers.
Arthur lost his wife to Parkinson's Disease after being her sole caretaker for several years. Survivors include four sons: Robert of Masset, BC, Canada, and his wife Debbie of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada; Eric and his wife,Jean of Proctor, Vt.; Thomas of Burlington and Ted and his wife Beth of Atkinson, N.H.; one daughter, Mary Lynn and her husband Jay Jenkins of Spofford, N.H.; two brothers, John and his wife Vivian of Lake Dallas, and Bert and his wife Kathryn of Naples, Fla. and Hardwick; a sister-in-law, Yvonne Smith of Hardwick; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Joan and Jay Zwynenburg of Bennington, Vt.; two maternal aunts, Carolyn Chabot of East Lempster, N.H., and Priscilla Whitcher of South Ryegate, Vt.; seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Laura; a brother, David F. Smith; a sister, Francesca E. Horton, and her husband, Paul.
ARRANGEMENTS: There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton, Vt. on Sunday, July 10, 2011 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to "Team Scott" in care of Ted Smith, 33 Island Pond Road, Atkinson, NH 03811.
