Barbara Birdsall Khalkhali, 68 of Hendersonville, NC, died Wed., May 26, 2010 following a period of declining health. She was the daughter of Dr. Clarence and Mrs. Elizabeth (Betty) Pratt Birdsall, and was born on May 25, 1942. She was a resident of Kingston, before moving to Hendersonville, NC, nineteen years ago.
A graduate of Garland Junior College, she was sponsored by the State of Massachusetts as a teacher in Early Childhood Development for children three years old to first graders. Following her marriage in 1972 to her loving husband, Iradj Khalkhali, she continued to teach on a volunteer basis.
One of her greatest accomplishments was creating the volunteer program, The Kingston Community House in Kingston. The Community House is a non-profit program that supplies daily needs to senior citizens, and those who are homebound, whether needing food, medicine or transportation. Barbara put together such a successful program that it was recognized by Rosalyn Carter and the Carter Administration.
Barbara was a member of the Unity Center in Mills River, NC. She was a passionate gardener, an avid water and snow skier, and volunteer at animal and thrift shops in Hendersonville. She was a conservationist and promoted the use of rain barrels in her community. She enjoyed craftmaking and scrapbooking. She was a fanatic NASCAR (especially Rusty Wallace) fan. Her special friend was Mr. Lucky, a dog of dubious origin, rescued by Barb and Iradj from the side of the road after he had been hit by a vehicle. Both here and in North Carolina, Barbara could be found walking and exploring with her family, friends and dogs.
She leaves her husband, Iradj Khalkhali; her daughter Lisa Cochran Berl and her husband, Thomas; her grandchildren, Caitlyn and Cameron Berl; her brothers, Dr. Clayton (Pete) Birdsall and C. Benson (Ben) Birdsall, her nephews, Clayton, Jr., Johnathan, Daniel Birdsall and his wife, Nancy; her niece, Mary Elizabeth Birdsall; her cousin, Abbie-jane Anderson and her husband, Donald. She will be missed by many friends and family.
A Memorial Celebration of her Life and a Reception will be held on Sun., June 13, at 3:00 p.m., at the Universalist Unitarian Church, 15 Kenoza Avenue, Haverhill, MA. The Rev. Emeritus Janet Bowering and the Rev. Frank Clarkson will be officiating. All are invited to attend. Memorial contributions may be made to the Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandra, VA 22312.
