Elaine's Story

Fremont, N.H. — Elaine M. Gilman O’Brien, 73, joined her Heavenly Father on March 23, 2013 after a long and courageous battle with lung and bone cancer. She was born Jan. 13, 1940 in Haverhill, MA, daughter of the late John Shannon Gilman II and Yvonne Irene (LaPlume) Gilman of Kingston, NH.

Elaine grew up in Kingston, NH and was a graduate of Sanborn Seminary. Afterwards she worked as a billing clerk for Exeter & Hampton Electric Co. Then she worked at Philips Exeter Academy, first as a front desk clerk at the Exeter Inn and then as a bookkeeper at the Academy Bookstore. She married James O’Brien and made homes in five other states before he retired from the Navy to Fremont, NH. After her children had grown, she worked at Ben Franklin and afterwards the NH State Liquor Store.

Elaine had been a life-long member of the First Congregational Church of Kingston where she taught Sunday School, sung in the choir, served as secretary to the Pilgrim Youth Fellowship, then later served on the Religious Education Committee and the Search Committee. Elaine enjoyed sewing, watching wildlife, landscaping, and classical music. Her warm smile and bubbly personality will be missed.

Elaine is survived by her husband of 43 years, CPO James J. O’Brien, Ret. of Fremont, NH; her daughter Catherine O’Brien and her husband Ian McPhee of Atkinson, NH; her daughter Mary O’Brien of Fremont, NH; her granddaughter Shannon McPhee of Atkinson, NH; her brother John Shannon Gilman III and his wife Jennie of Brentwood, NH; her sister Janet Hartman and her husband Charles of So. Thomaston, ME; her sister Claudia Landers and her husband Thomas of Nottingham, NH; her sister Lucy Smith and her husband Pastor James of Belmont, NH; many nieces and nephews.

ARRANGEMENTS: Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 PM at the Brewitt Funeral Home in Exeter, NH. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 28, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the First Congregational Church in Kingston, NH and the burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
