Portsmouth, NH — James Makarchuk, 92, of Portsmouth, N.H., passed away Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at Banner Gardens Hospice Care Center in Mesa, Ariz. Born in Portsmouth, N.H., on June 20, 1921, he was the son of John and Anna Makarchuk.
He graduated from Portsmouth High School, Class of 1940, and was a member of the PHS Football Team. James was a World War II Veteran, retiring at the Rank of Staff Sergeant.
Following WWII, he worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a Master Electrician. He continued to serve his country when he joined the Army National Guard Reserve Unit stationed in Portsmouth, N.H., retiring at the Rank of Master Sergeant.
Jim resided in Pannaway Manor, Portsmouth, N.H., for over 64 years. He loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, and especially tending to his backyard vegetable garden and fruit trees.
Jim was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Ardell Virginia Succi Makarchuk. Surviving are his four children, Susan Gail Cilley and her husband, Dennis, of Dover, N.H., Nancy Elaine Darnstaedt of Kingston, N.H., John James Makarchuk and his wife, Margaret, of Chandler, Ariz., Janice Ann Makarchuk and her spouse, Lisa Farrell, of Rehoboth, Mass.; 6 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-granddaughter.
Jim will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
ARRANGEMENTS: Arrangements through Farrell's Funeral Home, Portsmouth, N.H., with a private, immediate family, graveside service in Portsmouth, N.H., at a future date.
