KINGSTON, NH - John L. VanderSande, 99, of Kingston, N.H., died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018, at the Colonial Poplin Nursing Home in Freemont, N.H.
He was born on Jan. 3, 1919, in Paterson, N.J., son of Emiel J. and Elsa (Fryns) Vandersande.
Mr. VanderSande was raised in the Paterson and Fairlawn, N.J., area, graduating from Paterson Eastside High School with the Class of 1936 and graduated in 1942 from the Academy of Aeronautics of Newark, N.J., with a degree in Aeronautics Engineering.
He had been employed by Chase National Bank, New York City, the Glenn L. Martin Co. of Baltimore, Md.; EDO Aircraft Co. of Long Island, NY.; Wright Aeronautical Co. of Woodbridge, N.J.; MW Kellogg Co., Jersey City; and retired from Camloc Fastener Company of Paramus, N.J., in 1975 as Chief Engineer.
He was married to Sue (DeVlieger) VanderSande in 1961, together making their residence in, North Haledon, N.J., prior to moving to Middletown Springs, Vt., in 1975. Prior to that, Mr. Vandersande resided in Paterson, N.J., Fair Lawn, N.J., Baltimore, Md., Washington Township, N.J., and Los Angeles, Calif.
Following the death of his wife, Sue DeVlieger VanderSande in 1986, Mr. VanderSande moved to Rutland, Vt., in 1994, and was a resident of Kingston, N.H., since 2001.
Mr. VanderSande volunteered at Rutland Regional Medical Center for 14 years and was a volunteer at the Exeter Hospital in Exeter, N.H. He was active in Amateur Radio Operation (Ham Radio Operator) known on the air by the call sign, "W1JV." He also enjoyed photography and aviation as an Aircraft owner and private pilot for many years.
He was a member of the St. Anne's Church of Middletown Springs and presented the church with the current church sign in memory of his wife. He was a member of Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL) and the Green Mountain Wireless Society of Rutland, Vt.
He is survived by two sons, John B. VanderSande of Newbury, Mass., and Jacques R. (Jack) VanderSande of Noxon, Mont.; his step-daughter, Diane Fay of Natick, Mass.; his step-son, Joseph Della Torre of Ridgefield Park, N.J.; by eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and his niece, Patricia Pellegrino of Morristown, N.J.
Besides his wife, he was predeceased by a son, Emiel D. VanderSande on Oct 26, 2008, and a sister, Alice Connelly.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018, at the St. Anne's Church, Middletown Springs, Vt.
Burial will be at a later date in the Pleasant View Cemetery.
