Lorraine's Story

Text size

PLAISTOW, NH: Lorraine Francine (Parks/Shattuck) Gleed was born in Portsmouth, N.H., to William H. Parks and Hazel Althea (Fogg) Parks. Both of Lorraine's parents died of TB. Her father died in 1927 and her mother in 1928. Lorraine's two older siblings, William H. and Gwendolyn Louise, lived with their maternal grandparents, Frank and Minnie Fogg in Hampton, N.H. Both being in their late 70s, they could not care for Lorraine.

Hazel's beloved sister, Doris Louise (Fogg) and her husband, Walter Shattuck, having no children of their own, were blessed to be able to adopt Lorraine. Lorraine grew up having a wonderful life with parents who showered her with love and affection. Since her siblings did not live that far away, she was fortunate to have a relationship with them.

Lorraine was married briefly to Jason Aaron Gorodetsky. They had one child, Andrea Louise.

Lorraine married the love of her life, Carlton Wilbur Gleed in 1950. They grew up together and both went to Haverhill High School. Carlie, as Lorraine lovingly called him, adopted her daughter, Andrea Louise.

They lived in the Riverside area of Haverhill, Mass., before moving to Plaistow, N.H., where they lived in the same home for 49 years. They enjoyed camping and spent nearly all of their summers in New Hampshire or Maine. They spent more than 20 summers camping at Gray's Homestead in Southport, Maine, with best friend Cora and their many camping friends.

Lorraine was a great cook who learned from her mother. She did, however, announce upon Carlie's retirement, that he was "now the cook." She had a green thumb and was known for her African Violet and Geranium displays. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and reading.

Lorraine was predeceased by both sets of parents; her brother, William Parks; her sister, Gwendolyn (Parks) Welch; and her loving husband of 61 years, Carlton Wilbur Gleed.

She is survived by her children, Andrea Donohoe and husband, Patrick Donohoe, Sr. of Hampstead, N.H., Melissa Wagner and husband, Thomas of West Springfield, Mass., Carlton W. Gleed II and partner, Douglas Crandall of Washington, D.C., and Katrina Supino of Windham, N.H.

She is also survived by her six grandchildren, Patrick Donohoe, Jr., Caroline Donohoe, Emily Donohoe, Jillian Wagner, Andrew Wagner and Elizabeth Supino.

Funeral arrangements were by Brookside Funeral Home, Plaistow, N.H. Lorraine was laid to rest beside her husband in Walnut Cemetery, Haverhill, Mass., where a graveside service was held for immediate family members. Memorial contributions may be made in Lorraine's memory to Alzheimer's Association 480 Pleasant St., Watertown, MA 02472. *It is with great sorrow that Ma and Pa's much loved grandson, Andrew Wagner, tragically passed away in May, 2014.
