Marie M.'s Story
Marie Marden Currier, longtime resident of Barrington, R.I. and widow of Richard E. Currier, died surrounded by family on Friday, June 23rd, 2017 at Bethany Home of Rhode Island.
She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Birkes (Ricky) of Rumford, R.I., Anne Furey (Charles) of Mansfield, Mass., and her late son, Peter Currier’s wife, Elana Currier of Jupiter, Fla. She is also survived by her sister, Peggy Johnston of Huntsville Alabama, and seven grandchildren: Kelly Coelho, Katie Birkes, Alison Birkes, Gina Currier, Richard Currier, Chad Furey, and Gillian O’Brien. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren.
Born July 10, 1924 in Newton, N.H., Marie received a BA from UNH and had a long, successful career teaching and coaching at the high school level, most of them at Barrington High School. She, herself, was a tremendous sports enthusiast, downhill skiing until she was 75. She was a leader in the Title IX movement dedicated to give women equal access to sports. She will be remembered for her strength, courage, grace and manners and for her unwavering support of her family, and for the twinkle in her eye.
Calling hours were at Smith-Mason Funeral Home, Riverside, R.I. on Wednesday, June 28th from 4 to 7 p.m., with a memorial service from 7 to 7:30 p.m.
