Martha's Story

KENSINGTON, N.H. — Martha Briggs, 96, died Sunday night, Dec. 19, 2010 at her home after a period of failing health.

She was born Aug. 7, 1914 in Newburyport, the daughter of the late Sumner and Dorothy (Palmer) Card.

Martha was a graduate of Amesbury High School, Amesbury. She was a longtime resident of Kensington. She was a 4-H leader for 31 years and an active member of the Kensington American Legion Auxiliary for 42 years. She was also a member of the Kensington Congregational Church with her husband and they both served as Deacons. Martha was a charter member of the Kensington Historical Society.

She was predeceased by a son, Robert Briggs. Martha is survived by husband of 67 years, Leslie C. Briggs of Kensington; three daughters and their husbands, Sally and John Desrosiers of Kensington, Sue Goodwin of Kensington, and Sherrie and Rudy Bintein of Norwich, England; four grandchildren, Dawn and her husband Curt Speaks of Lodi, Calif., Jim and wife Heather Goodwin of Kensington, Tami and her husband Howard Dolan of Exeter, and Ron and his wife Christine Briggs of Seabrook; two great-grandchildren, Ryan Briggs of Seabrook, and Chelsea Ligocki of Lodi; and her father, Tom Ligocki of Exeter; one step-grandson, Robert Canning of New Hampshire.

ARRANGEMENTS: Calling hours will be held on Monday, Dec. 27, 2010 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Kensington Congregational Church. The memorial service will follow on Monday, Dec. 27, 2010 at 3:30 p.m. at the church. A reception gathering will follow the service downstairs in the Church Vestry. A graveside service will be held in the spring at the Village Cemetery, Kensington. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Rockingham VNA & Hospice, 137 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833 or the charity of one's choice.
