Penelope C. Lester
Born in Vythos, Greece, she was the daughter of the late Christos and Zoe (Papayiotas) Caradimos. With her late husband, Penny was the proprietor of Lester’s Variety in Quincy, Mass. for many years. Following retirement, Penny resided in Kingston, N.H.
A dedicated wife, mother, Yia Yia, and friend, Penny’s family was paramount in her life. She loved to prepare delicious meals for her loving family and friends to enjoy. Penny gave new meaning to the Greek word “Filoxenia”, which literally means “comfort to others through food and hospitality”. Until a few weeks ago, she was still rolling out sheets of filo to make spanakopita. She will be best remembered for her generous heart and love of family.
Penny is survived by her son, Stephen Lester and wife Lois Gibbs; three daughters, Electra Alessio and late husband Buddy Alessio, Corinne Lester, and Joy Lester and husband James Boyd; seven grandchildren, Michael Gibbs, Melissa Lester, Ryan Lester, Christopher Lester, Amanda Boyd, Elizabeth Cammarata, and Emily Boyd; three great grandchildren, Anna, Sean and Samuel Makowski; sister, Andromachi Pagonis; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins, both locally and in Greece. In addition to her parents, Penny was predeceased by her husband, Steven Mitrakas Lester.
Her Visitation was held in the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 111 Island Pond Rd, Manchester, NH, on Friday, August 10. Penny was laid to rest beside her husband at Pine Grove Cemetery. Assisting the family with arrangements is the Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to the Kingston Volunteer Fire Association, P.O. Box 302, Kingston, NH 03848 or to Amedisys Foundation (aka Beacon Hospice), 25 New Hampshire Ave., Suite 272, Portsmouth, NH 03801.
