W. Ralph Sampson Jr., 82, died Sat., April 24, 2010, at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Cambridge, following a brief illness.

Born in Everett, son of the late William R. and Isobel (Hughes) Sampson, he attended local schools and graduated Everett High School and attended Coyne Electrical School in Boston. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a radio operator and instructor from 1945 until 1949. Employed as a dance instructor for the Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Boston, he worked for National Airlines in New York and Ford Motor Co. in Somerville and later worked for several years at Process Engineering of Plaistow. He was employed at H&H Engineering in Methuen at the time of his retirement. He was in the donut business for 22 years and he and his wife Rita were the owners and operators of the former Busy Bee Donut Shop in Plaistow from 1965 until 1977.

A member of Holy Angels Church of St. Luke the Evangelist Parish of Plaistow, he was a 32nd Degree member of the Spicket Lodge of Mason’s in Salem, and Bektash Shrine of Concord and was named Mason of the year in 2000. He was also a member of the Timberlane Band Parents Association and Good Sam RV Chapter “Blazers”. Mr. Sampson enjoyed creating stained glass plaques, trips to Europe, camping, trips in his R.V. and gardening.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Rita (Ciampaglia) Sampson; two sons, Steven A. Sampson and his wife Linda of Danville and Thomas M. Sampson of Plaistow; twin daughters, Suzanne M. Sampson and her fiance Gary Borak of Danville and Dianne S. Healey and her husband Michael of Atkinson; four grandchildren, Timothy J., Madison M., Patrick J. and Ryan J. Healey. He was predeceased by his brother, Joel L. Sampson.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on April 30 in Holy Angels Church of St. Luke the Evangelist Parish in Plaistow followed by burial in Saint Patrick’s Cemetery, Haverhill, MA.
