SOUTH HAMPTON, NH: Walter Francis Shivik died suddenly on Dec. 21.
The son of Victor and Ethel Shivik, he was born in Bethlehem, Pa., on Aug. 1, 1941. He was a 1963 graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, attaining Chief Engineer during his service while traveling to many exotic locations. Walter received a Master's in Engineering from the University of New Hampshire in 1968. He was the sole proprietor of Shivik Associates, LLC and had been described by his colleagues as being both a gentleman and gentle man of high integrity. He believed deeply in public service and served as Selectman and Moderator for the Town of South Hampton, N.H., for many years.
Walter was happiest when outdoors, whether it be spending summers on the family “Farm” in Porter, Maine, fishing on his favorite trout stream with his beloved dog, Brutus, hitting the slopes at Gunstock, or simply sitting in a folding chair watching his bees.
He found kindred spirits at the Newburyport Unitarian Church and was an active member for many years. He was a perpetual supporter of the underdog, be it in sports, history, literature or simply life in general. Most importantly, Walter was a devoted family man and over the last few years had the great joy of getting to know and love his first grandchild. He is survived by his wife, Judy; sister, Jaqi; daughters, Jessica and Maida, grandson, Roan and sons-in-law, Brooke Hidell and Caelim Parkes.
Donations can be made in his memory to the NHSPCA in Stratham, NH (http://www.nhspca.org/), or A Safe Place (http://www.asafeplacenh.org/).
A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, February 18, at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 26 Pleasant Street, Newburyport.
