Amesbury, MA — William H. Goodwin, Jr., age 69, lifelong resident of Amesbury, died Sunday afternoon at Northeast Rehabilitation Hospital in Salem, N.H.
Born in Amesbury, June 9, 1943, he was the son of Virginia (Comley) Goodwin Churchill of Merrimac and the late William H. Goodwin, Sr., and step-son of the late June E. (Moore) Goodwin. He attended the Seventh Day Adventist School, as well as Amesbury High School.
Known by many as "Bill" or "Beaver," he retired from the Town of Amesbury, where he was foreman of the Department of Public Works and had also been the Animal Control Officer, Animal Health Inspector and volunteer firefighter.
Having grown up on his grandfather’s farm in Amesbury, Bill’s love of animals and farming started at an early age. Throughout most of his life, he worked on area farms, as well as on his own farm, raising chickens, ducks, turkeys, goats, cows, horses, and cultivating the land. He was a kind, hard-working man with a great sense of humor and hearty laughter.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by three sons, Carlton Goodwin and wife, Debi, of Kingston, N.H., William H. Goodwin, III of Amesbury, and Adam W. Goodwin and wife, Nicole, of Hampton, N.H.; a daughter, Cynthia Sampson and husband, Corey, of Whitman; a brother, Henry W. Goodwin and wife, Laura, of Somersworth, N.H.; a step-brother, David A. Touhey and wife, Suzanne, of Newton, N.H.; along with nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins, including his cousin, Winthrop Comley, III, of West Parish, Maine; his uncle, Charles Comley of Arizona; and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his son, Wade Stephen Goodwin.
ARRANGEMENTS: Graveside services at Mount Prospect Cemetery, Amesbury, will be private for the family. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701 or to the American Diabetes Association, 330 Congress Street, 5th Floor, Boston, MA 02210. Arrangements are by Paul C. Rogers & Sons Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Avenue, Amesbury.
